Then
Since the early 1900's, our forests have become over
crowded
with small diameter trees and other Hazardous
Fuels such as dead and down material.

Small Forest fires was once natures way of eliminating
these hazardous fuels. However, due to policy and public
pressure, fire was removed from the landscape in order
to protect the public as well as the valuable forest
resources.

As time moved on, and more and more people moved
into the woods in search of a simpler life, fire became
more of a danger to the public and was therefore seen
as something that must be contained and controlled at
all costs.

However with the effective removal of fire from the
ecosystem, small trees and dead and down material
have been allowed to accumulate, creating extreme
conditions in which wide spread infestations, disease
and catastrophic wildfires have become the norm.

In the recent past, it became  evident that the health of our
forests were in rapid decline. Land Management officials
realized that the policies of the past had no place in land
management practices of the future. Forest health practices
and procedures had to be developed. Fire had to be looked
at as a tool again and not as a threat.

This reversal in thought and policy allowed land managers
to reintroduce fire back into the ecosystem as well as
employ practices such as thinning to reduce the hazardous
fuels and restore natures fragile balance. .
